Annual Backflow Testing Requirement – Protecting Our Water System
Why Backflow Protection Matters
Milligan Water Supply Corporation is committed to providing safe, clean drinking water to all members. One important part of protecting our water system is preventing backflow.
Backflow occurs when water flows in the reverse direction — from a customer’s plumbing system back into the public water system. This can happen due to changes in pressure, equipment failure, or cross-connections with irrigation systems, chemicals, or other non-potable water sources. If not prevented, backflow can allow contaminants to enter the drinking water supply.
Why Irrigation Systems Require Testing
Irrigation systems are one of the most common sources of potential backflow because they often connect to fertilizers, pesticides, soil, and standing water. For this reason, state regulations and water utility standards require that irrigation systems be equipped with an approved backflow prevention device.
While these devices are highly effective, they are mechanical devices that can fail over time due to wear, debris, freezing, or internal component failure. A device may appear to be working but still fail to protect the system. That is why annual testing by a certified backflow tester is required.
Annual Testing Requirement
All members with an irrigation system connected to the Milligan WSC water system must:
- Maintain an approved backflow prevention device
- Have the device tested annually by a certified backflow tester
- Test results must be submitted to http://www.bsionline.com by your tester
This requirement is in place to comply with state drinking water regulations and to protect the health and safety of all members.
If Testing Is Not Completed
If annual testing is not completed by the required deadline, Milligan WSC may take steps to ensure the device is tested to protect the water system. Any costs associated with required testing or enforcement actions may be billed to the member as permitted by our tariff and service agreement.
Our Goal
Our goal is not enforcement — it is protection of our shared water supply. When every member maintains their backflow device, we reduce the risk of contamination and ensure safe water for our families, neighbors, and community.
